Hello friends!
Today I found an Elna PRO 925 DCX serger at a local estate sale, in the box with most of its accessories still in their unbroken bags. Looks to me like the thing had been threaded but otherwise not used—it's spotless. And we know how messy sergers get! I bought it with 6 feet (and a bag of magazines, templates, and specialty threads) for $100.
My only serger experience prior to this is my Jaguar Epochlock 298D, which I also bought at an estate sale years ago (seriously, stitchers, check estate sales in your area for some great collections whose previous owners would love nothing more than to know the goodies are going to be used!). The Jag is a tank and I've loved using it, purely as a 4-thread serger. (I had no other feet or plates for it.)
So! I have this Elna now, which is frankly intimidating to look at. If any other Elna owners have tips for me, I'm all ears! I have the book for it, although apparently the 925 was a late update to the 905, so even my manual isn't quite right. (The 925 has 5 needle slots, and the 905 had 4.)
This isn't a 'should I buy?' post, because it's right here with me, and I'm keeping it. But I'm very interested in PR user stories—good or bad!—for this particular model.
Thanks!

You have exactly the same machine that I have and it is a real workhorse. Before anything else, get out your oil and give it a good oiling. It might be worth it to take it to an Elna dealer and have them do a really thorough job - there are places to oil that can't be reached by yourself because they are under the cover and this machine is 10 - 15 years old and the oil has probably dried up and you could totally ruin it if you use it without any oil on it. Next - did you get a VCR tape with the machine on how to thread and use the machine - and next - do you have a VCR to watch it on? If not, next join the Yahoo group for Elna serger owners. They have links in their files to you tube videos of these tapes and you can watch them online. They are really good instructions. I had a TV and VCR right next to my serger and would watch the video, then do what it said about how to thread for each type of stitch. There are several other users of this particular or the next newer model - the 945, here on Patternreview and we will all be glad to help you any way we can, but if there isn't much indication that it has been used recently, don't use it until it is oiled. This should keep you busy for a day or two and come back if you have any more questions.
ETA: Be sure to use the EL705 needles recommended for this serger. Especially when using the coverlock stitch. There are like
these special needles.

Hi..I think this serger is similar to the Pfaff 48xx (4872??) series and share same parts and instructions. I bought my Pfaff 4850 used, it had sat around for 5 yrs, owner took one class before getting ill. It had no book, accessories or pedal, and had never used or threaded a serger. I just wanted one for knits. Got the 4852 book, watched a few online classes to get over threading/tension fears, got a foot pedal, cleaned and oiled it, and am up and running. Relatively pain-free. I had bad results on the coverstitch threading until I just pulled the lower looper thread to the left and get it pulled up by the needles (instead of me pulling it up and placing it under the foot). What a great find! I wish I found one! If I found one, then next I really would be looking for some of those elna pro cards for it, to go with it, that go into the slot, with all the stitches pre-set up on them, as they were pretty neat. You can still get any stitch types that would be on any cards if you programed it in your self, and really bother to do that and figure out how to do it, but I think it would be way more fun to just stick some of those cards in there instead actually.
Doing that, you could get cards for it that were even made after it, for the newer overlockers in the same series ones after it, and I think they still would work fine! So, that makes it really open ended even!
I don't know where you would find them now, but maybe used on ebay or such?
Go here to see what they all look like, so you can see all those neat pre-programed cards andall the pre-programed stuff on them and see what you want to look for even:

Download this .pdf file too, as good pictures of all of them and the stitches on it.

You don't need the ProCards. The files section at the Elna Serger Yahoo Group has all the settings for all the stitches available on the cards. They aren't automatic, but it tells exactly what all the settings are. I did get all the pro cards that are out but I don't use them very often. Most of the ones used most are in the machine.

Annsew65, thanks for the tips. I plugged it in and switched it on just to make sure it fired up, and also turned the flywheel by hand to make sure everything seemed to be moving freely, and it sure does. I will take your advice all the same, though, and when I finish the manual to learn how, I'll give it an oiling. I'll also take your advice and join the group. It did still have the VHS tape in the box, but I don't have a VCR! I figured I could find it on YouTube, but there are no 925 videos on YouTube at all. It seems like it was kind of an interim model between the 905 and 945 maybe?
After looking at it again today, I'm more convinced than ever that it hasn't been used at all. I also found a catalog sheet for the PRO cards where the owner had noted 'HAVE' next to 5 of them. I suspect those cards are still in the pile of stuff left over from the estate sale—the previous owner had a TON of sewing stuff that didn't get purchased. So I called the estate sale agent today to ask, and she said she'd be back at the house on Wednesday and would be happy to look for me. Even if I don't really need them, hopefully I'll get those cards, too. They won't be useful to anyone else anyway. Sounds like I'll have plenty to figure out without them!
Thanks for the links, Beauturbo! Those are a lot of crazy stitches. I'm pretty easy: I'm excited about the cover hem, since my (darling beloved) Husqvarna Lily really doesn't do double-needle very well.

I have 1 in my sewing room that was missing a couple of parts so just getting it going in the last 6 months. Here's a link that shows how to use a lot of the feet for your serger, it uses the same feet as Pfaff 48XX series of sergers and current line of Janome/Elna serger combo's.Janome feet workbook

Yes, the 945 was a later model, threading is the same in both.It seems like it was kind of an interim model between the 905 and 945 maybe?
Elna sergers have a tilt out needle bar to make needle insertion easier, a part that could break with age/not lining up properly. On my own machine I insert the needles just like a normal serger without tilting and also have it plugged into a serge protector to protect the electronics.

That's a great tip, Sew2006. I've seen mentioned online a few times that people have had to replace that needle bar, in some cases several times. It's a very cool feature, but I can easily see how it could be a disaster if someone gets distracted and doesn't seat it correctly before hitting the pedal. That's a lot of torque to put on a unit like that. So inserting needles like a normal machine is a really good idea.
Are Janome, Pfaff, and Elna all under the same parent company? Or just the same feet? My Husqvarna technically fits normal snap-on feet, but something about the needle position makes some of them not work quite right. Funny how that happens. (I love you, Husqy, but $130 for a walking foot??)

In terms of the serger feet the reason the feet are interchangeable between these brands for very specific model numbers, the feet are identical. Other past Janome/Elna/Pfaff serger feet are different: in sergers the degree of slant of the needle bar and the room in the shank area determine how a foot attaches. There's also a difference between the feed dogs on a 4 thread serger and a coverlock combo. The knife position (some are straight comming down from the top others are more curved and attached from the bottom) make getting the proper serger foot important.Skill: Advanced

That's good to know. On the other hand, this one has 6 feet already. I'd be surprised if I'll ever need any additional.
..says the lady with several hundreds of dollars worth of feet already..
